The Highland Drove dates back to the mid-1700s and today it offers charming and contemporary bedrooms, a varied and seasonal menu based on local produce and an excellent location for exploring the Eden Valley and Lake District. The inn is within the Cumbrian village of Great Salkeld which is only a few miles from the market town of Penrith.

Open for food and drink 7 days week, The Drove is run by Tom and Claire Lefevre who took over in 2022. The pub is an important part of the community and prides itself in offering a warm welcome to everyone from locals to visitors passing through. There are a selection of en suite bedrooms which include a smart TV’s, tea/coffee making facilities and free WiFi.

Downstairs there is a 30 cover restaurant with a menu changes regularly to reflect local and seasonal produce and well stocked bar with a selection of real ales from the wealth of Cumbrian breweries on our doorstep. Upstairs we have a large function room perfect for anything from larger family meals to birthdays, funerals and even smaller weddings.

This is a stunning location just 10 minutes from the edge of the Lake District and 30 minutes from Hadrian's wall. There are beautiful views of the Pennines from the pub and the town of Penrith has a great blend of shops, places to eat and attractions including its castle and tower.

  • Super nice Inn in a beautiful location with lots going on. Lovely outdoor beer garden with children's area and a pool table and darts indoors. It's obviously a popular destination for locals and was recommended for lunch. Which was pretty good. The cabbage in particular was excellent on the Sunday roast. Would recommend .

  • We had an absolutely wonderful couple of nights stay at the Highland Drove just over a week ago. A lovely old pub and restaurant in a beautiful village in the stunning Eden Valley. A very short distance from The Lakes - but with far less people! We had a warm welcome and immediately felt at home and looked after. The room was comfortable and clean. We ate both nights in the pub restaurant and the menu was imaginative and the food was exceptional - and really good value too! The breakfasts were tremendous too - with generous portions. We would definitely recommend it for a stay!!

  • Even though I live local I hadn’t been to the The Highland Drove before. However, I will certainly be returning. The staff were welcoming and discretely attentive to just the right level. I had earlier informed them about allergies, etc and this was addressed immediately by the staff with the chef ticking off the dishes that were compliant. The food was very good and tasty, a good range of dishes and caters well for vegetarians/vegans. The atmosphere was pleasant, friendly and comfortable. The beer well kept. All in all a good evening.
